when i started studying java, the book i used was "Java: An Introduction to Problem Solving and Programming" by Walter Savitch...it really explains everything..even people who have no background in programming can easily learn java..i know, how is that possible since java is a complex language.. but the Savitch book is really good..

I would recomend the book "professional javascript for web developers" by Nicholas C. Zakas of Willey publication. There are also a number of online resources (though not as good as the one you find in books) like:

ECMA is the standization body governing the javascript. You can find news on new changes & proposed changes in Javascript in their website.

o'reiley has a good book on javascript, bit pricey but very imformative, or else if you are a beginner i had a book called javascript for the world wide web it was ok for starters before stepping onto the harder stuff. little example on form validation and onmouseover and onmouseout, plus some info on IF statements and functions and all the fun stuff to do with javascript.

Javascript without knowledge of HTML is no good. If you know a little bit of HTML then try Javascript Bible (Danny Goodman).

pick up o'reilly Javascript: the definitive guide.

I use it as a reference when I am too lazy to google!

but just because you learn some of the syntax, you still have to learn the state-of-the-art.

My opinion of S-O-T-A is jquery.com, not for beginners, but it is the way all cool js will be written.
