The reason for this type of question is due to the lack of direction by the UN.
Look who is on the Human Rights Committee. Check that out, it makes the fight for Human Rights a Joke. Oil for food scandal. Lack of action. How many resolutions we put towards Iraq- I do not have that many fingers.
Since the end of the Cold War the UN has been a tool used by the European Powers against the United States. During the Cold War, Europe pretended to like us because we were their protection against the Soviet Union. But since that threat is gone they have learned to hate us again and they use the UN for this very purpose.
The UN will die like the League of Nations.
My old Professor told me, when discussing the UN and the Euro, "everytime Europe tries to unite they end up killing eachother."

World peace! 3 main reasons...
To provide a basic mechanism for nations to exhaust the dialog option before starting another war. Security Council
To provide humanitarian and medical support and guidance to the developing world. World Health Organization
To provide a neutral monitoring system for agreements signed by member states such as the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The world would be a poorer place without it.

Do people not tire of this? Either you are expecting a straight answer, or your question is loaded and you want me to start the usual barrage of UN bashing.
Could you add some details, so I know where you stand, or if you are in reality neutral to the question?
Okay. Thanks for the clarification. I think someone beat me to a fuller answer though! Check some of those below!

They are suppose to be the "balls" of all the nations combined. But unfortunately, they have none. If ever they do (get balls), and have humanitarian interests at heart, it could become a great entity to police world politics.
