Just going to Social Security will not legally change your name.
You must obtain a court order granting the name change. If you are an adult you must give written notice by publication that your name is going to be changed. You cannot change your name to avoid debts or taxes. You cannot change your name to commit fraud, ie. change your name to Tom Cruise.
In California takes a minimum of 4 weeks from filing your paperwork, giving notice by publication and then having a court date for the judge to grant the order
Once you change your name through the court you can then send a copy of the order to Social Security to have your SS# reflect your new name. Same with changing your driver's license, credit cards, etc.

Just applying at Social Security will not do it. You have to file a petition with the courts and see a judge to order a name change, esp where you want a first name changed. Then you will need to change it with social security, drivers license division, all of your creditors etc. It can be quite the hassle. Adopt a fun first name as a nickname. You see it all the time where someone is named Buford or some other ridiculous name (no offense) but chooses to go by some completely different name just because.

Well, it's easy if it's more of a nickname that the name change does. Otherwise, you use it perhaps to hold separate identities, stop people from butchering your original/old name. It really depends on the person. In some cases, government highly recommends change. There's also the possibility that their parents named them something inappropriate or that causes teasing, like my friend Mold. ...

It isn't hard to change your name, just go to the social security office and apply for the name change, and there you go, you have a new name. The hard part is getting everyone to refer to you by your new name. Especially if is it something like "Slappy".
Good luck to you in your new name search.
What is wrong with the first name you have?
A "cool" first name might be fun at first, then you might get bored with it and want to change your name again...a vicious cycle!

Getting people to call you by your new name can be difficult. Getting an official change (i.e. drivers license, social security card) can be a real pain.
If you want to do the official route, in the US you need to file with the state court to do the change. In other countries there's probably a different procedure.

yea changing your name is really hard for you to do. I know someone at my college that is going through a name change and he is having a hard time with it....plus his parents refuse to call him by it....
for him though the change was nessicarly...
so if you just want to change because you want a cool name...I would suggest you not do it...its pretty hard from what I can tell

You can do it, and if you are a woman getting married, you may well do it, and in any event it's a pain in the tail. You will need a new driver's license, a new passport, have to write all your creditors, tell your bank, and (shudder!) negotiate with the Social Security system.
