I'm looking for somewhere that my 11 yo son and myself could get some practical advice. I was told I should look into alanon, but I'm afraid of upsetting his already fragile equilibrium. Maybe that's just an excuse to keep pretending that life is still normal. I don't know.

Anyway, if you've been there and know something about it, let me know what you think.

If anything I think that going will help him to get more balanced. Addiction is a family disease where we pretend that what is isn't. Going should help your son to get clarification that what he feels is okay and that he has done nothing wrong. It will also help you to be a better support for him while learning tools to cope better and feel better, too. I just got back from a meeting a couple of hours ago and the support there is wonderful. It is helpful to me to hear that I am not alone in this - a huge help. I am busy and don't generally make time for myself, but this is the best use of my time that I can find. It reminds me of all the tools I have to keep myself "balanced" while not trying to control my significant other who has this disease. There is no judgment at these meetings. Part of the issue is to stop pretending - it doesn't help you or your son and it enables the diseased person. Good luck - and know that there are plenty of people out there who go through this. It is more "normal" than you think, but you don't have to make it your norm.
