I didn't mean to offend - just sometimes you ask a serious question and then idiots give you stupid answers and it's annoying......ho hum. Enjoy the rest of your day.

Well a number of "soft" cheeses (brie, camembert, etc.) can harbor a bacteria that causes listeria in the mom and that can be harmful to your unborn baby if you eat it. However, the risk is much bigger if you eat cheese made from unpasteurised milk, so if you make sure to buy only cheese made from pasteurised milk, you're already reducing the risk by a big margin.
Also, if you're planning to heat the cheese (i.e. use bocconcini (which is a sort of mozzarella for those who don't know) on pizza) it's fine - the bacteria are killed by the heat.

This may be common knowledge as of recently. But it is a very recent thing. This is my third pregnancy and I've NEVER, EVER been told this until this pregnancy. Many women are very surprised by this.
I also think it is stupid and not true. I think they just picked something to worry all of us about. It doesn't make sense and here is why I think that--
I live in Japan. I like to eat sushi. Pregnant Japanese women eat sushi ALL THE TIME. So, I call the OB and ask if I can eat sushi. I'm told no because of the listeria. I mention that the Japanese women eat it. The OB says, "Well, they've eaten sushi all their lives. It is a staple. They're climatized to it." Hmmm...really? So I say, "Okay, but many American women grew up on lunch meat. It is a staple. Aren't we climatized to it?" She couldn't answer me!! She had no way to respond to that.
This listeria scare is just a new thing to worry pregnant women but I don't think there is anything to it. I'm sure there is a risk but I think it is so terribly small that there is no reason to tell pregnant women not to eat lunch meat and soft cheese. I ate both with my first two pregnancies.
If anything they should be telling pregnant women to avoid prepackaged foods, harmful preservatives and hydrogenated oils. But do they say anything about those things? No. That is just stupid.
Also, don't you find it interesting that pregnant women shouldn't eat tuna but nursing moms are encouraged to eat tuna?

Well I ate feta while pregnant I was not told nothing about soft cheese but, feta has a rather hard consistency if you think you crumble it. It isn't mushy even though packed in its juice. I was older with my child so I took very good care of both of us. If you feel this strongly call your Dr. or a health food store they know about health staying health even while pregnant and maybe can help.....Anything to ease your mind, because being upset isn't good for either of you

I must say I am amazed at the number of people who have never heard of this! I am not sure about that first cheese, but feta is a no no. Risk is low, but play it safe, avoid it.

It's when a cheese isn't pastuarised that you can't eat it. Have a look on the label and see if it is pastaurised and then you can eat it.

I got list recently from my dietician and they made no mention of the first cheese, but if it is a blue-veined cheese, it is not safe. Feta, Brie, Chamberet (SP) are not safe.
