I believe it to be a combination of things. I think it's a backlash against the corporate arrogance of the past where the company worked people to death. There's also a generation of young people who have had everything provided for them and feel that someone should continue to provide.
Along those lines, one thing that's different from my teen years (I'm 40) is that jobs that used to be typically done by teens part time while attending school, such as fast food, are now performed by immigrants or the elderly as a living. As such, there seems to be a lack of the work ethic that was developed earlier in years past.

Why do the employers squeeze every penny they can out of the company and then lay off workers to make the stock numbers look good, then give themselves a big fat bonus?
And the whole time cut employee benefits, make part time positions so the company doesn't have to pay benefits, lay off or fire older workers so they can not get their retirement. Restructure so the company can get rid of higher paid employees and hire in new younger people at much lower wages and no benefits. Charge the employee for the health care insurance. etc.
Why does the employer feel that the employee must live to work and not work to live.
Why does the company pay any executive a 1 million dollar salary, full paid benefits, stock options, bonus', expense account, company car with gas card, tuition reimbursement, Profit sharing, retirement package, and more.
Then pay the employee, (the one who actually does the work that makes the money) $8.00 per hour and say that they can't afford to give them a raise?
Why do you have the nerve to ask such a asinine question?
Have a nice day.
:o)

When the middle class was axed in droves in the 80's, only to be resurrected in the dot.com boom and bust of the late 90's and the globalization cutbacks earlier this decade, the concept of employee loyalty evaporated.
The corporation requires workers to make a profit.
The workers are mercenaries who seek corporations that pay high salaries and benefits.
Let the games begin....

someone above wrote "american arrogance". i don't live in america and it's exactly the same in my country. maybe worse ! good question. i think that when people act like this, it's either because of lack of personality so it's the only way to promote theirselves, or complete ignorance and laziness...Stand up and always have a point of view...it's the only thing that distinguishes you from the crowd....

Put on a tough appearance is another way to protect one's boundaries.
But it is annoying, of course.
It speaks millions on the company's culture

I wonder the same thing. I also wonder why bosses allow some people to get by with it and not others.
