First, there are no effective alternatives to surgery. B vitamins might help, wearing a splint might help, stopping the activity that is causing it might help, but these are only temporary measures and in my experience they will have little effect. The longer surgery is postponed, the more likely that there will be permanent nerve damage. If this is a workplace injury, Workers Comp will pay. If not, there are other measures. Talk to your doctor frankly. He or she should be able to help you find affordable surgery.

BTW, carpal tunnel syndrome results from pressure on the nerve in the wrist. Chiropractors cannot alleviate this and I seriously doubt that acupuncture would have any effect either. You need a traditional orthopedic specialst. Good luck in finding help!

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a medical condition in which the median nerve is compressed at the wrist causing symptoms like tingling, numbness, night time wakening, pain, coldness, and sometimes weakness in parts of the hand. CTS is more common in women than it is in men, and has a peak incidence around age 50 (though it can occur at any age). The lifetime risk for CTS is around 10% of the adult population There has been much discussion as to the most effective treatment for CTS. However, treatments can be generally divided into five basic categories apart from surgery: Immobilizing braces Physiotherapy Localized steroid injectionsPrioritizing hand activities and ergonomics Dietary changes and medication Carpal tunnel release surgery Anyone of the above treatements can be done depending upon various factors and the condition of the disease. Only your doctor can decide what treatment can be done. you can tell hem about your inability to proceed with surgery and he will tell youthe next suitable alternate. Please do not delay. Best of Health.

There may be some temporary relief in alternative medicine such as accupuncture but surgery will most likely be the best bet. I have a relative that was in contant pain and tingling. She had the arthroscoptic surgery done. Check with you local social services and hospital billing offices. Sometimes there are doctors that take on a few charity cases a month. Some hospitals also charge on a sliding scale. What about worker's comp? Do you do repetitive motion at work? I've known several cases that were paid for by worker's comp since it is a work-related injury. Best wishes on this because I know it is painful!

anyone who tells you that surgury is the ONLY way has not seriously researched or tried alternative methods. 99% of the time, there is better ways then surgery. I have had carpel tunnel several times from typing all the time at work, and if I wear a wrist brace with the metal rod in it that keeps your wrist from moving for about 2-3 weeks, it will go away. of course if you keep doing the same thing that is causing the problem, it will come back. you need to keep your wrist from being in the position that is causing it to rub the nerve. Try the brace, it helps.

The suggestions to try chiropractors is good. Try it before you get surgery. Even though you feel you can't afford surgery, believe me, if the doctor says you have to have it, go to your closest welfare office and see if there is anyway medical or medicare can pay for some of this, you just may quailify. Also, doctors are more willing to take payments. There is always an, excuse the pun, alternative

Vitamin B6 and B2, along with a smaller amount of Bcomplex, works better than surgery. I had it severely and was healed totally with above. But must be committed to taking it daily until the symptoms are well gone. Get more information by looking at books at health food stores.

Good discussion and advice in: Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine (Murray & Pizzorno) and in Prescription For Natural Cures (Balch & Stengler). Both give good directions of the use of pyridoxine and other natural remedies.
You might try a magnet bracelet or wrist wrap. See Magnet Therapy by Lawrence & Rosch for more details.
Good luck!

Do try a chiropractor. You will be surprised at how effective they can be. Ask around to find a reputable practitioner. Most will take x-rays and give you a pretty thorough exam, at a fraction of what doctors charge. And their treatments can sometimes work miracles. Mine did!

Also, a reputable chiropractor will know when a medical condition is beyond the scope of his treatment, and will recommend you see a medical doctor.
