These doorknobs aren't for sissies. In order to open the door (which is really a second class lever), you need to exert a greater force over a shorter distance. Doorknobs placed on the edge of the door, opposite the hinges, require less force (the sissy part), but over a greater distance.
To make matters more complicated, in some countries (Ireland for example), stationary knobs are present in the middle of the door more for decorative (or balance, if you're drunk) than for actual opening and closing purposes.
