ok, so i know its not good to consume caffeine while pregnant, but i was wondering how much is too much and if i take prenatal vitamins is it as bad to have caffeine? i heard its because it takes calcium out of yours and your babys bones, so if this is true, would it not be as bad if i had caffeine but took a calcium pill along with my prenatal pill?

General rule is if you have to have caffeine try to limit it to one cup a day. One cup of coffee, a serving of pop...that sort of stuff.
Mountain Dew has the most caffeine and Ginger Ale doesn't have any.

I researched this a lot when I was pregnant because I drank a lot of Diet Coke before then. I learned the same thing about the calcium but what was more important to me was that no one really knows if caffeine affects the baby or not. I've read that the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says that one cup of coffee a day is okay, so to be conservative, I would try to drink 1/2 a soda to 1 soda once or twice a week, only when I was really craving it. Most people I know try to eliminate coffee altogether while they are pregnant, just in case. Remember, caffeine is a drug! :) Also, water is the best thing for the baby, and being hydrated will keep you from getting false labor later on, which is an awesome benefit!!

As long as you're not downing a pot of coffee or a six pack of soda a day you and your baby will be fine.

Taking extra calcium is like beating a dead horse. As long as you're taking your vitamin a day, and drinking milk regularly, you're getting enough calcium. Your body can only process so much at a time. It excretes the rest. So taking a bunch of expensive calcium supplements is uselss.

Besides, you really shouldn't start any new drugs, vitamins, or supplements without first discussing possible effects and contraindications with your doctor.

With that being said, enjoy your morning mocha or latte, and even a soda with lunch. It's not going to hurt you or your baby. =)

I saw 2 doctors when I was pg. One said NO caffeine and the other said there was nothing wrong with it. When I would have it I would have cramps so I had to cut way back on it. For me that meant only 1 Coke a day instead of 3 or 4.

If you're a heavy coffee drinker and pregnant, I strongly suggest you shift to decaf coffee. The caffeine isn't good for the baby and for your body as well because your body is sustaining 2 bodies during the pregnancy and you are the main source. Even if you upgrade your prenatal vitamins, any caffeine (soda, coffee, tea) will affect the brain development of your baby which is why it is asked to be minimized or stopped during the pregnancy. Ask your doctor about decaf. I stopped taking brewed coffee and instant coffee and shifted to decaf during my pregnancies but even lessened my regular 4 cups to 2 cups a day. Then replaced it with milk chocolate drinks instead or pure milk. No coke or any sodas for me either.

According to recent studies 2-3, 8oz cups of coffee are totally safe ammounts of caffine to consume. You need about 1,200 mg of calcium a day. Women have been drinking coffee for 100's of years while pregnant, and their kids were fine.

From what I have read, 400 mg is too much. Two cups of coffee a day are ok, but not mugs. Anymore than two cups is too much caffeine.

Caffeine interferes with the development of the respiratory system in baby and can cause SIDS.

I dont think that one serving of a caffinated beverage would be too bad, but you should drink plenty of water too, not only for your health but for the baby. Drink water with the prenatal vitamin or you will feel sick to your stomache. Or i did, at least

is hard to give up caffeine especially if ur used to it on a daily basis. But it honestly depends on how much u take in. I loved caffeine when i was pregnant but i didnt want to hurt the baby so i limit myself to drink one cup in a week.

You shouldnt really deprive urself because is goin to make you crave even more. Try to ask your doctor to see how much he/she is ok.
