The best items to sell on eBay are collectibles and rares. If it is hard to find, sell it on eBay and let the bidding go wild. Sometimes you will get lucky, sometimes you break even, but overall that is the most rewarding and fun way to do eBay.
You will usually get the best results if you specialize in something you already know something about. What are your hobbies? What interests you? What do you look for when you go on eBay yourself? That's what you should sell!
My friend used to make a good living on ebay, no real job at all. He sold classic rock Cd's and autographs and vintage electronics. Obviously he had a built-in customer base. If you buy a classic rock record from 1959 and you play it on your 2007 stereo it just isn't the same as listening to it on a vintage, mint condition 1959 top of the line phonograph. Then find that same album, missing the record itself but autographed with a letter of authenticity. Next thing you know, my friend had his mortgage paid up for six months!
If you are planning to open an eBay store, stick with one general category. Let's say you are into cross stitching. You can sell a variety of supplies, some patterns, some kits... but where you will make the real cash is to combine auctions and sell the accessories... the organizer boxes for the floss, the plastic storage totes, the magnifier lamps...
Or another example... cell phones. Sure you an re-sell the hottest phones or the cheapest phones or the prepaid phones but make sure you carry the accessories in your store too. Face plates, cases, light-up-antennas, batteries, etc... People would rather buy several things from one seller to save on shipping, especially when it is relatively low priced items like these examples. If you only made $1 profit for each item, those dollars add up.

According to the time of year and people feelings, lol! I work with a Drop Shipper, and sold more computer flat monitors, and made great money, but then died down. Then there is buying VINTAGE T SHIRTS from Yard Sales and Garage Sales, as I read that a woman sold a whole bunch to Adam Sandler, as it is his thing. It is according to the space and time, you have. Third parties are nice and easy, and I am just starting up a 3rd party candle selling, and all I need to do is sell it, and she makes and delivers the items. I love her products, and glad I can make money, also!
But, all up to you! Go and get the Ebay Bible, the newer version (I think 3rd is the current, but who knows, as it helps explain the different thngs, days, times, holidays, fees, etc.
GOOD LUCK!

The best one to sell online is the one that will make you money!.... The obvious being said basically what you have to do is spend time looking at prices you can get from wholesalers....then comparing them to prices on ebay and if people are actually bidding on them. The more in demand a product is the more money you can make even if each one only makes you 5 dollars. I recommend http://www.wholesalehelpers.com/ws.html for looking at prices for products you can get.
