We are all creatures of HABITS - good and habit. Habit is something we consciously do it until it forms part of our nature, and subconsciously are able to do it (without us knowing it). Identify the habits you want to break, break them consciously (again and again) and there'll be a time it will be rid off (as erased away from the conscious part of our brain).

Depends on what it is first off. Like, I have a bad habit, and try substituting something else instead of it. Now, I have heard that if takes 30 days to create a habit, and no that is not from "Supersiz Me" or "30 Days", It was from a very reliable source. Thus, if you can stop this habit by substituting something else for it for 30 days, you should be ok, for at least a while. Sometimes we associate our bad habit with an activity, say, baseball players chew tabacco. Now, if they could just substitute seeds for 30 times during 30 games, they should be ok. But, there are peer presure and other things of nature that harm this bad habit. Thus, this is why a habit is tough to get over. So try my 30 day plan, see how it works for you.

Just change the bad habit to something that would be a good habit. Get a different habit, something helpful not hurtful

identifying the major thought & behavioral patterns that govern and provoke the addiction. once identified, the patterns can be broken by not following the normal addiction protocol. the earlier signs of detection are more subtle yet if these earlier patterns are broken, beating the habit can come easier. If you only catch yourself when you are wanting the cigarette, it is really hard to not smoke. but if you can identify and learn to detect the entire series of patterns in your life that lead up to the craving, you can make earlier changes so you don't get to the craving. In severe cases, the individual may require a total molecular rearrangement. this process can be very long and hard and may result in massive amounts of pain or even death.
In beating all habits or addictions, the brain and nerves of the body have to be "re-wired" and the body's cells have to adapt to receive and not receive certain protein strands sent from the hypothalamus, thus: cravings occur. This is all achieved by the identification, detection and prevention of the cascade of different behavioral patterns that govern and provoke the habit or addiction.
