Just a note on the "etch" answer. If you want to write indelibly on glass, etchant would create a diffuse whitish effect that wouldn't ever come off. However, be aware that many etchants contain hydrofluoric acid, which can be very dangerous if you aren't very careful. Here's a link:

permanent markers are not permanent. I can come off with nail polish remover (acetone). glass is not porous and id very easy to clean.
