Back when the great pyramid was built. I would like to know the very first large structure ever built like that.

it seems that the ziggurats were. the tower of babel was a ziggurat.

A ziggurat "to build on a raised area" is a temple tower of the ancient Mesopotamian valley and Iran, having the form of a terraced pyramid of successively receding stories.

Ziggurats were a form of temple common to the Sumerians, Babylonians and Assyrians of ancient Mesopotamia.The earliest examples of the ziggurat date from the end of the third millennium BCE and the latest date from the 6th century BCE.

before the great pyramids were built, Egyptians were building step pyramids. Several cultures arrived at this design independently. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Step_pyramid

However, the first monuments were probably made out of wood, and, as such, didn't survive for our inspection.
