There r two options with u.
Either to use ur pic or use ur avatar. If u want to use ur avatar. Visit http://avatar.yahoo.com Make ur avatar there and save it. Or u bring the icon of avatar on ur yahoo toolbar. To do so cilck the pencil, select personal options, select add edit button and check the box of avatar and then click finished. It will bring the icon of avatar on ur yahoo toolbar which can be used by u anytime as per ur convenience.
Secondly, to use a pic, u need to hv 360 page. Visit http://360.yahoo.com to create ur 360 page and upload ur photo there. Make sure that u set ur photo to be primary photo which u want to use on yahoo answers. After doing these things, come back on ur yahoo answers profile. Here u click edit info and then click either the circle of using ur pic or the circle of using ur avatar. Now click the preview and save. It will solve ur problem.
Besides above two U hv any one of the following options also.

Go to http://avatars.yahoo.com/, be sure you have a Yahoo ID and sign in. Create your Avatar and you should then see the Avatar instead of the gray smiley when you use Yahoo Anwers.

i'm able to work out your widely used recommendations at your finger information avatar. yet i'm seeing an incredible type of smiley gray boxes. additionally, the numerous avatars i'm seeing are old ones that have been replaced presently.

Click the silly gray grin
then click the link edit my info
then click my yahoo avatar.. there is another link click it then it will redirect you to the avatar editor..

it is easy click on the silly little grin, then where it says brouse click on a picture of yourself or you can chuse your avator. good luck.
