i have read several articles claiming that we need to stop buying oil from middle eastern countries because it funds terrorism. having grown up in saudi arabia, i fail to see the logic behind this conclusion.

first, the oil workers are expats and saudis with normal lives just like you and me. they do not strap on bombs and kill innocent people. obviously they are not terrorists so the money they earn is not going towards terrorism.

also, the saudi government owns aramco, the biggest oil company in the world. all of aramco's profits go to the the saudi royal family. the terrorists want to overthrow the royal family and install an islamic theocracy, so the royal family hates them. in fact, the royal family exiled bin laden from saudi arabia. obviously, the oil money the saudis get is not going towards funding any kind of terrorism.

so please explain to me why people are still claiming that the money we pay at the pump funds terrorism. is there something i'm missing?

It is a fear tactic being used by socialist conservatives. Right now their goal is to turn everyone against the middle east so that they can bring democracy "wanting to line their pockets with money" to the world.

Well you are right in your understanding. It is amazing how that is generalized in the media, especially when the United States receives the majority of their oil from Venezuela.

The comment derives from a few variables.

1) It has been known that Middle Eastern Oil money has been funneled to terrorist groups through a third parties.

2) It is known that certain countries like Iran and Iraq have directly gave money to help the radical elements of Islam. When bin Laden set up camps in Africa, it was money and training from Iran that supported Al-Qaida. Suddam giving money to families of suicide bombers.

3) Saudiii Element is very interesting. Yes bin Laden wants to destroy the House of Saud, because of the House of Saud let western troops in to Saudi Arabia to fight Iraq in the first Gulf War. Other than Al-Qaida, the House of Saud has supported other Terrorist Groups or what others would call freedom fighters.I think they are terrorists other think not.

From a western point of view is that the Saudis only stand against Terrorists that threaten their seat in power.

Also, the point that Saudi School lack the teaching of tolerance. These schools are directly funded by the House of Saud from Oil revenues.
So it is not just direct funding of acting terrorists in the field, but also the funding of the ideology that creates terrorists.

The Saudi Government base their survival on these elements. If the west was not involved they would be overthrown. In order to keep the west involved they need terrorists to show a need for assistance. So to keep this system going the support the basic ideology behind extremism and indirectly support many terrorist elements.

Oil money flows from the gas you buy to the middle east where the oil comes out of the ground, they get paid for it by the barrel, Ok when they get the money they fund schools and many things in some very radical countries some have oil some don't but they spread the money around also money comes from islamics from all over the world and flows into helping the extremeist. Where do you think Gadaffi got his money and the schools the Saudi's funded in Afganhistan and Pakistan plus all over the world not to mention the temples they build around the world which money flows back to in the form of donations, its all tied together and oil is the big cheese, if oil would never had been found in the middle east those people would still be just wandering the desert living as nomads and traders.

... well I think the oil goes in a few places other than just the saudi royal family and the "oil workers"... there are others that own businesses... billions of dollars here...

take Osama's family for example... they were in construction... while construction isn't oil, would anyone have any real amount of money to build anything, if it wasn't for oil... the vast majoirty of businesses in the Saudi economy is run on oil money... even if they aren't directly related to oil...

and saudi is clearly a terror hot bed... what like 14 or the 19 hijackers were saudi... that's not an accident...

I mean where do they get these billions of dollars to fund terror... some is from drugs... yes... but I doubt all of it is... there are many more links to oil money than just the two you mentioned...

Apparently; you are missing the fact that Saudi Arabia is not the only nation in the Middle East to supply the world with oil. Saddam used oil money to fund suicide/homicide bombings in Israel. Other Middle East leaders secretly support terrorism internationally, like Syria and Iran. Their weapons wound up in the hands of Hezbollah to be used on Israel. Bin Laden was receiving a share of the oil wealth from his family and was using that to fund terrorism even after exile until U.S. froze the accounts he had around the world. Even Saudi Royal family members were donating to the 'cause' from their private accounts. Not all of them, not even most of them, but some of them were.

We need to break our addiction to oil because the oil barons are using our addiction against us. Technology is five years away from turning water into a usable fuel. Technology is already able to turn our garbage and our green waste into fuel but the market hasn't bought the idea yet.

The Saudi royalty has payed off terrorist in the recent past so as to keep them from hitting inside Saudi Arabia. Many Muslim Charity's are fronts to collect money for terrorists so when the USA gives all the princes over there so much money they donate it to so called charity it gets to the terrorists. We the USA should pump our own oil as we have plenty in the gulf of Mexico and Colorado and Alaska and so on.

Well, first off, Saudi Arabia is not the only middle eastern country we get oil from....you know, Iran is a major supplier too. Venezula too, and these guys are just as bad....
And then, many of those who sell the oil and make their livings fromit, fund different terrorist organizations.

I'm all for getting off our dependancy from this environmentally unfriendly, terrorist friendly, mode of energy.....there are much better alternatives.

The chain of logic refers primarily to Iran and Syria.

Both support terrorism. Oil revenues (to varying degrees) support both.

The concept is juvenile at best. Commodities such as oil that are being produced at levels just barely above current consumption rates are difficult to stop or affect significantly without resorting to violent means.

So though oil income funds terrorist activities indirectly, there is no "end run" that can avoid this. Those that complain along these lines can best accomplish the goal the espouse through the termination of their own consumption of the commodity.

Saudi's may hate Bin Laden but they sure love Hamas. Plus Bush is an oil guy and he's a terrorist.

We also get a percentage of oil from Iran, and they love Hezbollah.

you are missing the fact that if we buy oil from Iraq it is putting money into the community no mater who gets it. Some of that money will go towards some unrelated thing in Iraq that is terrorist involved.
I doint care if it is terrorist involved or not i think it is rediculous that we are selling our oil to china and then buying oil from iraq I would much rather see north america keeping our own oil in our own country and not buy a single thing from any Arab country. We should be taking care of ourselves before anyone else
