Species memory...Our ancestors lived in the dark
before fire, and they had reason to be afraid. There
were things in the dark that killed and ate them.
It has carried through in your genes.
That is also why housecats stalk their prey, even when
playing. That is what their bigger ancestors did....

We fear the unknown, and darkness hides things. Some of the fear is justifiable, as bad people often do their work at night.

It is not a bad idea to be cautious, even in daylight. Being freaked out is not abnormal.

My suggestion would be that you challenge your fears by deliberately doing things late at night (in relatively safe areas.)

When I was in college I went on a post midnight desert hike one morning, alone, and climbed a hill behind my university. It was daylight when I returned to the campus. It was one of the most spiritually intense experiences of my life.

I still learn from it, more than 40 years later.

I have heard that midnight is a tween time. Which means that things that go bump in the night are more able to get into our realm. Personally though, I have had way too many experiences with night to be able to be objective with this question. Maybe we know subconciously that there are things that are in our realm that we are scared of what we might see or feel, touch, smell, hear. I am always scared when my husband is not at home. Most of the time things happen to him at night and when he is gone for the night they will happen to me. Good thing he don't go away too often.

I don't know... but it is... Gothika (misspelled) the movie with Hallie Berry was on TV tonight and I had to turn the channel. I also will not go downstairs by myself or sometimes, I ask someone to sit on the commode while I take a shower! When I was a little girl, I learned a quote in Bible School that has helped me in my adult life... "What Time I Am Afraid, I Will Trust in Thee" I say this to myself and it really really helps... try it!

I think it's simply us subconciously remember back to our childhood days when we were read scary stories, listened to things going bump in the night, and our vivid imaginations running wild. Even though we aren't really scared of the dark as adults, there is still a little child in us all :)

you are not alone. I am too its just bc at night more people have more places to hide and you can not see them as easly. So we are overly cautious which there is nothing wrong with that i would rather be overly caustious then ot causious bc you never know. I even look in and under my van b4 i get in it.

We're prone to letting our active imagination take over...like being a child all over again! I know...I'm over 40 and still run from one room to another turning on a light...and then running 2 times as fast back...and I also DON'T let my feet be near under the bed for too long...and my foot DOESN'T dangle for fear of someTHING pulling on it..But this is only at night and only when it's just me and my husband...He finds me quite amusing!!

I also run up the stairs when locking the downstairs door at night...night lights are on in the big rooms...see..I've got myself covered...LOL

because the dark holds things that are a mystery and mysteries are the stuff that scare us. people like to know what is going on at all times it your way of "frighting the frighting away." however in the dark you don't have that ability hence your senses are on alert therefore making you scared is easier because you have no idea whats around you and that is frightening.

so am i, especially when i'm in the woods camping. I think it just has to do with the fact you cant see what is beyond the veiw you have. You really don't know what is beyond the light....I notice when its really dark out, my hearing is way more sensitive, i can hear everything and it sucks......cause if i hear something, i start thinking someone or something is gonna get me.\
