I definitely think that sleep is an important part of the learning process and that learning definitely DOES take place while asleep.

I do not believe that takes and things like that will learn you anything if you listen to them while asleep. I've tried this numerous times, no luck!

But I have, however, had results while trying to learn/memorize things right before going to bed. Read w/e you're trying to learn/memorize right before sleep and, I have started to believe, your subconscious sort of continues reading it over and over again while you sleep. I've been able to pass numerous tests and stuff using this method. It's not the most recommended if you need to learn a lot in one night, but over time it can be very useful :)

That's just what I've found to be true for me. It may be a totally different phenomenon that causes what has seemed to be true for me.

When I took Psychology in school, we had discussions on teaching methods. Whether a person could learn in his sleep, was a topic we discussed. One of the ways was to play a tape, I guess of whatever subject you were trying to learn. I guess for spelling, you could play a learning tape for spelling. Supposedly you would pick it up subconsciously in your sleep. Same with Math and such. I never tried it. I heard it works, but that's the best I can go for an answer.
