A few details are required to properly assist but, assuming you are using a PC on Windows XP or better and have the installation CD (driver) that came with your CDRW.
Go to Control Panel. Select Add/Remove Hardware then follow the prompts of the Wizard.
Best to uninstall then re-install your hardware using the DRIVER FROM CD.
Also, please check your software. I recommend NERO by Ahead.

Take it to your local computer store. It just sounds like it needs to be cleaned. There are some at home products to do this, but i really wouldnt recommend it tho. Professionals are always better.
