If you must have name brand stuff, join the rest of the public and get an iPod for a couple hundred. Or you can get the exact same thing without the name for $30-$100 at Wal-Mart or Target. I have a ilo myself. Never heard of the company befor but I bought it at wal-mart for $60 and it holds 300 songs.
The average song in MP3 format is 3-3.5MB. So if you buy an MP3 with 512MB of memory, assume you will get 146-170 songs. Don't go by how many songs the box says you will get. They don't use averages and make it sound like you can put 500 songs on it (assuming the songs are a minute long but they don't tell you that) It's all about advertising.
If you like a lot of songs, get the one with the biggest memory of course, but also look for ones that include expansion slots. Most say they take SD cards. (Secure Digital, the same ones that certain digital cameras take.) So a 2GB MP3 player with a 2GB memory card (make sure you get the memory card after you buy the MP3 and read the instructions. Some of them can only hold a certain amount of memory, like my old one, I can only put a 512MB SD card in it, if I put a bigger one in, it wont work.) So that would be a total of 4GB for about 1170-1365 songs. More than enough.

As far as I know no one wants to receive MP3 players since they are not "in"anymore. They are all on clearance by themselves.
Are you the one who will use it? If its for someone else, make sure it is an MP3 they want, since its IPODs or the top of the line phones with plenty of memory for downloaded files that are "cool" right now.

I got an MP3 online for only $30. It sounds great and is easy to use. I am not sure exactly how many songs it holds though.

anybody who says ipods are the best mp3 players are mainstream and not aware of better products..the toshiba gigabeat is superior in many ways, also microsoft outsourced the producstion of their first mp3 player to toshiba so i have high hopes for that
the 30gb toshiba gigabeat is 299.99 however it may have gone down to 249.99 to compete with the lower price ipod; it will hold approx 7500 songs
