Working at a zoo gives you animal contact, but that doesn't pay well relatively, and anyone can get that job. Being a vet makes you money, but what if healing isn't your thing? What are the other alternatives out there?

Don't listen to birdgirl, she needs to get off her high horse. There's nothing wrong with wanting to earn a comfortable living doing what you love. Zookeeper jobs don't pay well. Go into wildlife biology, get more than a bachelor's degree and try to get in at the state or federal level. If you want to work with animals then it IS the career for you. You may never get rich but I don't think that's what you were saying.

You'll find there are jobs out there for animal lovers paying upwards of 100K (with the proper education and experience of course)

NOT just ANYONE can get a job at a zoo...it has become a VERY highly competative career, and you need to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology to work as a zookeeper.
If you are looking to make a lot of money caring for animals, you will not find many choices...except for maybe a vet. But vets starting out usually don't even make that much...it is only if you have your own practice that you would make a really good living.
Most people study and work with animals because they love animals and are passionate about animals....not because they want to make a lot of money! If it is a lot of money you want, than working with animals is NOT for you. I make a fairly good living working as a wildlife biologist, lots of animal contact and animal study. Maybe that is something you might want to consider.

You might try doing some volunteer work at the local animal shelter. You would get some experience working with animals, and make some contacts with people who deal with animals. Plus do some good as well!!

a breeder near here has so many dogs, she has litters born weekly. She breeds the new popular designer dogs such as Yorkypoos and Maltypoos. She actually ships them to owners and they are expensive. She starts her work day at 5am. Bathing clipping, feeding, bathroom duty, clipping claws, worming, shots.
