I forgot to mention on the previous post that my friend is scheduled back to work once her 6 week maternity leave is over. So basically she's got a week left. I don't think she should go back right now since she's already stressed. Can a regular doctor give her a Rx for time off until she gets over some of her depression? She tells me she barely gets 4 hours a night as it is. I can't imagine what she's going to be like after going back to work full time!

Yes, she can get the time off. She may not get it with pay, though. Is she on an antidepressant? Has she seen a psychiatrist or her OB. This is where she should start.

She should absolutely take another 6 weeks off work. Her body is barely finished recovering from pregnancy and childbirth, and she should not be leaving her baby so soon.

The previous poster is right on target, diet plays a huge part in post partum depression. My naturopath said that extra protien and a good quality fish oil like Nutra-Sea are very important for new mothers, especially if you are nursing.
Lots of healthy food and as much help around the house as possible.

I'm sure she could get more time off from work. When Clinton was in office he wrote a paternity leave for dads & I forget how long it is, but it's really long. Of course it's without pay. I'm sure if men can get months off work to help the mom, then the mom should be able to get more than 6 weeks off work. She really needs to be on medication. This is a very difficult time for a mom. She also needs a good experienced pediatrician. One that has kids of his/her own. And it would be a good idea to have a doctor for herself who has kids. This is something that I've had to learn the hard way! First baby at 36yo and I have multiple sclerosis. I really needed doctors who understood my situation.

Not getting enough sleep is not Postpartum. I don't know where you work, don't know your employer's policy about maternity leave/attendance so I don't know if they would accept a doctors cert for her to stay out longer. That is something SHE would have to find out.

Also have her take vitamins and at night calcium, magnesium and zinc supplement. The calcium supplement help relax. She should eat a well balanced diet. After child birth, body is depleted of nutrients hence vitamins and well balanced nutrition is require. She should also visit a nutritionist.
