I am a free technology advocate, patents stop anyone from improving upon an initial design. Someone can't make a better machine, but has to make a whole new one, which might take a lot of resources and money. This is anti-technology. Non-patented technolgy can still make a person a lot of money and encourages progress and prevents a company from monopoling on something.

If you want to protect what you have invented, you will be wise to apply for a patent. Although it is a long process, it will be worth it in the long run if it is granted and used by big business.
