I grew up in DC and its awsome, however it is cold and not much of a change from PA. North Carolina hasd a bunch of amazing cities and coast line that still snows. Charlston, SC is Also an amazing place, the leaves will change but no snow. Go and visit different places before you move also try this web site....www.findyourspot.com Its fun and will give you some other options.
Good Luck!!

The Northeast is beautiful at anytime of the year. I was born in Maine and lived in Kennebunk for a little while during high school. Kennebunkport is really pretty. Right off the water and it has a bunch of little shops in the town. It does get really tourist-y in the summer but it's still pretty. And if you look at it this way, the foliage in the Fall is beautiful that far north. It gets pretty snowy in the Winter and Summer is just really gorgeous, being that close to the beach. If you want a small town feel, then I would say up near Kennebunk and Kennebunkport, Maine is worth checking out.

If you want actual leaf change, not just a pale shadow of autumn, you gotta check out the areas north of PA. Boston is a great place to start looking, but can get very expensive. Try Portland, ME - you get the best of New England with more of an urban feel (meaning more so than anywhere in Vermont or New Hampshire and most of Mass).
You will also get actual snow. If you stay coastal its actually slighly warmer than it is inland, and you get less snow. Definately stay away from central and western NY if you're not used to getting more than a foot snow each winter (Buffalo NY and Syracuse NY compete to see which city gets more snow- most years the totals get up into the 3ft+ range, not to mention the area surrounding Oswego NY, which actually gets more).
Anyway, I digress. Good luck!

Burlington VT and region. On the shores of Lake Champlain; nestled in a valley between the Green mountains and the Adirondacks; very New England but also relatively cosmopolitan with 4 colleges and universities with arts, theater, the classic outdoor Shelburne Museum' skiing/ice fishing/nature trails and eco friendly. Less than 1 and 1/2 hours drive to Montreal. Check it out, you may find it may just meet your requirements. Good luck.

I grew up in Richmond, VA. The westside (Henrico Co.) and southside (Chesterfield Co.) are the cool suburbs. It has a strong economy. It snows there a couple of times a year. Roanoke, VA has nice mountain scenery. Also, I have heard that Asheville, NC is one of the most beautiful places on earth. North Carolina has a lot of happening cities - Charlotte, Raleigh, etc... Are you sure that you want snow because living in a beach community (Myrtle Beach or Hylton Head Island) year-round is laid-back, relaxing, and fun.

I live in PA also. (SW - Pitts region). Anyway, it's all in the eye of the beholder - but! Up state NY is quite beautiful as is Vermont. I'm sure there is someone somewhere that will tell you Jersey is great too! however--like I said, it is in the eye of the beholder. I had been to PA several times in my life and recently moved here from the west coast (believe it or not). The perception of the east coast from westerners is that we live in some sort of concrete jungle. Simply not true. (Hence my theory - that it is all in the eye of the beholder).

You want snow? Try some of the northern most states. Maine or New Hampshire maybe?
Or some northern states farther inland, not on the coast. While they do get some snow on the east coast, its not as predictable. I love all the the cities on the east coast...all have their charm.
