NFL Kickers, whether Punters or Field Goal specialists (and we know Parcels HATES carrying BOTH), have made a significant difference in 3 of the last 5 Super Bowls. Successful Field Goal kicks, over 50 yards long, are not too frequent. Suppose the coaching staff must choose whether to try the Field Goal FOR 5 POINTS, and risk turning the ball over in THEIR OWN TERRITORY, or GO FOR IT and get 5 POINTS out of it.

An intersting strategic decision that has FAR MORE implications that whether to run a 2-point play. Your thoughts?

Well, I think field goal kickers get little to no respect. I mean if a field goal kicker misses a 50 yard field goal to win a game then it becomes his fault the team losses. Yet, if he nails the 50 yard field goal he is just doing his job. How many field goal kickers win the MVP for a game?

As for giving more points for longer field goals it is an interesting idea, but not to feasible. First, football is an action sport and the last thing fans want to watch is a team only trying to get into very long field goal range. Secondly, it is true that a 50 + yard field goal is an awesome feat, but so is a 99 yard rushing or passing TD. So, if distance becomes the measuring stick for difficulty then should we award more points for longer TDs? Say 6 points if it is on the opposing teams side of the field and 8 points if it is on your own? DO we then award defenses more points when the score TDs, because lets face it, it is much harder for defense to score than it is the offense? These may be extreme positions to take, but this is the ground you get into when we start saying one feat is bigger or better than another.

This is a horrible idea.

What's next? Are we gonna start giving teams 8 points for a TD of more than 70 yards or something?

C'mon now.

Field Goals are 3 points, no matter how long they are.

And a 50 yard kick wouldn't turn the ball over in THEIR OWN TERRITORY, a 50 yard kick would be from the 33. It would be practically impossible for somebody to kick a FG from their own territory, as it would have to be a 67 yard field goal.

Actually, I think college and pro football would be far more interesting and exciting if all field goal and extra point kicking were done away with. Only allow two point conversions after td's. They would still have to have kick-offs and punting, of course. It's just not right that a kicker should make more points than a running back, receiver, or quarterback!!!!!! And I ABSOLUTELY HATE games that are decided by a dam kicker!!!!!!!

I disagree--to say that a fifty yarder is equivilant to a touchdown almost? Plus that could definetly mess things up if one team had the wind with them in the fourth quarter--come on you'd have teams kicking field goals on first down! I could see maybe a Fantasy Football bonus--but in the real NFL? I don't think so...

You could argue for either side... Giving a team more points for a longer sucessful field goal was implemented in the XFL, which lasted for just a year before folding. But you could also say that because the team failed to drive farther down the field, they deserve just as many points... Take your side...

I think that's a stupid idea. No respect? I can't agree with you on that one. The kicker is probably one of the most valuable positions on the football team.

They are the ones who lead the league in scoring every year. They are the ones who top the all-time NFL scoring list. How can you not respect that?

I have a better idea. Why not deduct points for a missed field goal?

Kickers aren't football players.
