Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author, attempts to convince his audience that the psychological punishment of being ostracized (and her sin showcased in a glaring way) was too harsh for Hester Prynne's offense. It appears that Hawthorne also believes that what she did was unworthy of judgment by the people of her community.

Don't rent the movie with Demi Moore or your teacher will know for sure you did not read the book. (They screwed that book up royally.) One of my students did that. Guess what his grade was?

Spend a little time reading the book. It can be difficult to read, but it won't take long if you break it down into sections. It was originally written as a serial; you might as well read it the same way.

Go get the movie! I think its basic focus is on the fact that Hester has to wear her sin openly while the minister has to struggle internally with his sin and guilt that eventually eats away at him or something.

I read it once a long time ago. It's not memorable enough to recall it. Try getting the cliff notes for it or just rent the movie.
