She is not constipated unless she has very hard stool, like rabbit pellets. What she has is an inflammed gut and she is having diarrhea because she cannot handle the formula she is on. She should be tried on ISOMIL, it is soy based. Your doctor should know this. AND NO- she should not be having water or juice. Switch doctors immediately. Go to the new one and take a diaper with the poop in with you. The doctor can test it for lactose intolerance, but she may be allergic to the protein in milk, not the sugar. It is even possible that she needs an ultraspecial formula like nutramegen. DO NOT switch formulas on your own, but get rid of that doctor. Has your doctor asked to see her poop? If not, you have the wrong doc.

My babies both had the same thing when they were on formula. I couldn't breastfeed so they went on it right away. Thier little bodies aren't made to take formula, and the formula with the extra iron is really, really hard on them. You may want to go back to Isomil becasue the soy seems to be easier than cow's milk to digest in such delicate systems. Keep up the juice (apple is best because apples are a natural way to get everything unstopped but half juice and half water) and eventually your little baby should get used to it. We found that belly rubs with body temp baby oil was a good way to get things moving, and the skin to skin contact is something that most babies like. Good luck!!!!

the three answers above me are wrong. NEVER give your baby any kind of castor oil, supository, or enema!!! Talk to your doctor about those so that she can tell you not to do that too! They are horrifically bad for your baby, and juice is not bad. Tree hugger is right about the breastmilk though, if you can get yours to come back, you may want to try that.

Give your baby breastmilk. That will clean her out. The reason your baby is constipated is all the iron. Find a new doctor. Juice is too harsh on a newborn's system. What the h*** is your doctor thinking? Really, if you are able, do give breastfeeding a try. You should still have milk at 5 weeks. Even if she will not nurse and you have to pump and feed her. She will benefit.

I am guessing you are in the US so I can't advise on what formula to try but my first son had constipation for weeks and it seemed like forever. Every formula I tried wasn't right. It IS ok for you to give your baby cooled, boiled water between feeds but not as a substitute. I have a 2 week old and every midwife I have seen in that time has asked me if my baby is having water. They do get thirsty.

If she is constipated tho, her poo should be solid not runny? I would take her to the docs again just incase. Anyway, here are some tips I was given to help her go, try putting some brown sugar in her water or dialute a small amount of pure apple juice, make up one of her daily feeds with one less scoop of formula. After a feed take off her nappy and hold her over a changing mat- sit her up with her thighs on your hands and hold her legs appart- that worked everytime with my son but I had to watch out for shooting pee pee! Good luck xx

GIVE HER TIME. Babies have brand new "equipment" so to speak, and it takes time for it to adjust. Formula is slower to digest than breastmilk, so what may seem like constipation (the grunting, straining, and the more solid, peanutbuttery poop) turns out to be your daughter's digestive system developing.

I had the same concern with my son until I met other formula-feeding moms who reassured me that he'd be OK. Sure enough, by about 4 months old he was pooping like a pro!

If you feel the need to help her out, try this: lay her on her back on your bed and bring her knees to her chest. Hold the position for a second or two, then stretch her out gently. Do a few sets of this each day, and she's sure to feel better soon.

I would give her the powdered goats milk I think its meyenberg or something that is what my son took, he never could handle those other formulas, and I gave him this stuff in his bottle once a day for three days it is baby intestinal flora, because sometimes they do not begin to produce this. But once you give it to ther for three days just one tablet desoved in the bottle it will help him to digest his food properly. Be patient it takes a little bit to go through his system. You get it at a health food store. Try rubbing her belly gently or gently tap it to help, there is probably alot of gas from the constipation that makes it more painful.

Maybe she has milk allergies. This happened to my baby when he was a newborn. We had to put him on Similac Alimentum.Maybe you should try it.He was constipated & wanted to eat every 2 hours & had a hard time getting the formula down until we started using Alimentum.Talk to your doctor to see if it is ok.If you switched formulas without doing it gradually that can make babies constipated also.

You need to talk to your pediatrician right away. Blockage in a baby that young or any baby for that matter can be very dangerous.
I would not give water nor juice to a 5 week old unless told to do so specifically by a doctor!

Part of the problem for her could be that you're switching formulas too much! Give her lots of water, and pick ONE formula to work with for a few weeks, if she's still constipated, try a different one after atleast three weeks with the other formula.
She could be allergic to gluten, wheat, or dairy, so you may want to talk to your doctor about those possibilites.

OMG, i had the comparable subjects with my daughter. We used 8 categories of formula, all of them gave her incredibly undesirable gasoline and he or she grew to become into constipated, We constantly try each and every thing , they superb ingredient that helped is swaddling her, if that's what you propose by making use of colic carry then you definately already did that. The formula that worked for us grew to become into the Nutramigen, Its actual high priced whether it made my toddler chuffed. She has colic too, and he or she nonetheless has her fussy circumstances, you will no longer do away with that, that is going away after 3-4 months. whether it did cut back the fussiness and the gasoline. I constantly had to place her throughout my chest reason its like a heating pad to thier tummies, i gave her some mylicon drops and rocked her. i wish somthing works. sturdy success
