Face to face is definitely first choice, but IM allows me to meet people I'd never get to otherwise.

Face to face for family and friends, IM for work. I hate telephones, but don't mind text for the "where are you I will pick you up" stuff with the kids. I find telephone calls a bit intrusive of my time. I'm still a great fan of snail mail nothing like a letter in the mail from a friend.

Depends on who you are talking to and what the conversation is about. Most friends/family I like to talk to in person. One friend I love talking to on the phone because that is the only way we know each other and it's comfortable that way...no judging the other on physical appearances. When I'm not sure how I want to say something, e-mail is good because I can sit there for hours and figure out the right thing to say before I hit "send".

I prefer talking in person so I can read facial expressions, and body gestures. Instant messenger and phone are good ways of communication with people who you might not meet in person.

instant messengers are easier to talk with, but through instant messengers, you can show your true self, and if you make a blunder, it's easily erased...

I think it depends on the person itself. if the person is shy or doesn't have fluency in words he/she will prefer to use IM. But if the person is confident and good with words he/she will prefer person or phone. Each method has advantages and disadvantages.

I like to talk in person, that way you can use your hands and they can see your facial expressions when you talk, that way if you say something, they know how to take it.
