Does anyone have a inspiron? Is it normal for it to get so hot that u can't bare to have it on your lap? I've heard about the recent recalls of batteries, i am a little worried. I just received my laptop today 9/19 so i doubt i have one of those faulty ones.

My laptop overheats badly and shuts down. I had a couple of paperback books propping it up to get enough air to the fan. Definitely clean your fan screen. If it's easy to get to take the screen off and clean the fan itself. I use rubbing alcohol on a q-tip. Clean the fan blades and all the places you can reach. Do NOT used canned air - it will blow all the dust right into your laptop. Some friends of mine bought me a really neat thing. It's called a "Chill Mat" and is made by Targus. Not too spendy. It uses a USB port and is powered by the computer. There is no intake on the bottom, but it has 2 fans that run constantly while the computer is on (not too noisy). You can use it on any surface, including your lap. It's a must for me and I really appreciate it.

yes, A friend has the same model but some other dells get just as hot.

It's a definite problem with their design.

There's not much you can do really except search for a more efficient fan that's able to fit in the other ones place but you might be hard pressed for that.

If there's been alot of smoke or smog around the notebook especially oil vapour & smoke from a kitchen for an extended period of time, this can cause your fan blades to get very dirty and thus move up to 40% less air over your board & CPU.

If this is the case with you, Having the fan cleaned or replaced will cut down the heat and your laptop will run faster aswell because of this.

(You'd be supprised at the difference it could make).

Many laptops get uncomfortably warm while in use. While they are called "laptops", your lap is not the best place for them. A table or hard surface is best, to keep the vents open and provide good air flow. If you can raise it slightly to get air circulating underneath it, all the better.

Some people buy stands with built-in fans and such. A small cake rack works nearly as well, at a fraction of the price.

You should never sit a laptop on your lap without some type of pad. The bottom of laptops often gets hot. You can buy cooling pads at Walmart to keep it from overheating.
