He was a genius. People deliberately handball all the time, the only reason it was such a big deal is because he got away with it. I don't think he expected too and if the ref had spotted it, nobody would even remember it nowadays. Blame the ref/linesmen for not watching properly.

He is still a legend, "Hand of God" notwithstanding. He is a champion and football icon. We all must remember that Maradona also scored "The Goal of the Century" in that very same match against England, where he dribbled almost from midcourt and eluded the best English defenders.
From Wikipedia:
"The winning goal was the second goal by Diego Maradona in the 1986 FIFA World Cup quarter-final match, for Argentina against England on June 22, 1986, at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City; it came shortly after Maradona's infamous Hand of God goal. Nine minutes into the second half, Héctor Enrique passed the ball to Maradona some ten metres inside his own half. Maradona then began his 60 metre, 10 second dash towards the English goal, leaving behind five English outfield players (Hoddle, Reid, Sansom, Butcher and Fenwick) as well as goalkeeper Peter Shilton to make the score 2-0 to Argentina. Gary Lineker scored a goal for England 25 minutes later, but England was unable to equalize and Argentina won 2-1.
About the goal, Maradona said, "I made the play to give it to Valdano, but when I got to the area they surrounded me and I had no space. Therefore, I had to continue the play and finish it myself." A statue of Maradona immortalizing the moment has been erected outside the stadium.
Recently, Maradona said he could not have scored such a beautiful goal if it had not been against the honest English team, who did not knock him down as most defenses used to do. "They are probably the noblest in the world," he added.
On the goal, English striker Gary Lineker said "[it was] probably the one and only time in my whole career I felt like applauding the opposition scoring a goal.Lineker scored the only English goal of that match."

Picture this: In the 1986 World Cup, competition was at it's strongest.
The USSR had their best team since 1960, Belgium with Ceulemanns also had their best ever side, Enzo Francescoli was South American player of the year whilst representing Uruguay. Brazil had a very strong team, with Zico they key man and legendary Samba coach, Tele Santana.
England had a very strong team, with Lineker, Reid, Waddle, Barnes etc.Alex Ferguson was coach of Scotland, which had Souness, Hansen etc. Spain had the services of Butragueno and they actually crushed Denmark 6-1 in the Rd of 16.
Germany as usual, were efficient, with Rummeinegge still the main player. France had Platini at his peak, with legendary striker Papin leading the line. Even hosts Mexico had the services of their best ever player, Hugo Sanchez.
In a tournament of the stars, where the stars did shine, it was Diego Maradona who stood tallest and took a very ordinary Argentina side to the trophy.
Yes he may have cheated in that one game, but Argentina were still so much better than England on that day in Guadalaraja. And which player doesn't cheat, with so many diving these days. You can only cheat once, in the end, you must produce and boy, did Maradona ever produce.

That's why they call him the man with the golden hands or hand of god or something like that? But it was a pretty impressive goal regardless of the controversy. It was once, so he's not a cheater.

he did score a goal with his hand there's definite proof of that, but the ref should've made the call, how many footballers would be like don't allow it ref, i scored it with my hand, so i blame the ref, not him, it happened that way and the ref missed the call.....
