Yeah- standing in a bathroom stall that smells like pee is one of the best places to feed a baby.

Anyplace that a woman and her baby have the right to be, she should ahve the right to breastfeed. Why should she have to pump? Maybe she doesn't want to give her child a bottle. I breastfed my daughter, and while I was never comfortable nursing her in public I would never look down on a woman who does. I would feed Sophie out in the car or try and hurry home, but this is a FREE COUNTRY. I'm sorry, but would you rather the baby go hungry and start screaming because he wants something to eat? I don't know why people in this country look down on breastfeeding so much. It is a completely natural thing, not to mention best for the baby. If you don't like it, don't look. I do agree that if you are breastfeeding in public you should try to be as discreet as possible and cover up a little, but give me a break.
Just out of curiosity, how do you feel about pictures, movies, magaizines, etc. that have barely clothes girls all over the place? I'm sure you haven't written any posts about that, but when a woman is feeding her baby, you have an issue. Grow up a little bit.

What do you mean it was "hanging out"? Was her areola and nipple completely exposed? If the baby was latched on properly, you should have seen nothing but the top swell of her breast. I'm willing to bet this IS what you saw, and are still repulsed by it. The next time you go to the beach or the local pool, I'm guessing you'll see FAR MORE SKIN on some of the women (and teenage girls, sadly) there than you did on any breastfeeding mother you've ever seen.

Grow up and get a life. If all you have to do for fun is take your young child to McDonald's to clog his arteries, make him fat and ridicule someone feeding her baby, then you have no life. Ever heard of cooking dinner at home once in a while?

And the last time you ate you burger in the bathroom stall sitting on a nasty seat was... Your son needs to know why God gave women breasts. Not for the amusement of men. I do agree, some women do need to practice in front of a mirror, but that is no reason to feed in the bathroom. When I can I breastfeed in the car before we get out. Most of the time she will eat just before I get my plate. So I fed where ever we are and if people don't like it, they don't have to look. Sorry, but that is the most natural thing in the world. As for pumping, my 6 month old daughter has no idea what a bottle is! My 3 year old breastfed for 10 months, she didn't take a bottle either.

Why can't they? Pumping is a major pain in the *** that can cause supply problems, and bathrooms are icky and (furthermore) have no place to comfortably sit and nurse.

Why is it okay? Because she was feeding her baby, who needed to eat. Because breastfeeding is non-sexual use of the breasts.

Also, because her right to do that was almost certainly protected by law (most states now have such legislation)- the government says, she's allowed to hang her boob out whenever she likes, so long as there's a baby on it.

The question shouldn't be, why is this ok? The question should be, why does it seem to bother you?

Why is this NOT okay? I'm an Aussie, living in Australia, and I find many Americans just plain prudish. (No I am not trying to target you or anyone specifically nor am I trying to be socially discriminating; I am half American) I mean, it's only a boob. Do you have a pair? I know I do. Half the world's populations got 'em anyway and in many African countries, including some smaller Aboriginal tribs across Australia walk around stark naked. Nudity should be considered more socially acceptable. It's when people, especially women, walk around looking like silly little tarts that should be considered unacceptable. But really, if nature calls for a mother to breastfeed her baby, why should she have to go some place else just to feed her little one? If you find mothers breastfeeding in public so darn digusting turn your head, stop staring and go some where else.

i am a breast feeding mother, and even though you may not want to hear this. IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO BREAST FEED IN PUBLIC. i agree that she should have been more decorous with nursing her infant. yet banishing her to the bathroom is not the way to go. sometimes some women have problems with pumping, and therefore prefer to nurse. what i don't understand is why people have no problems with the low cut revealing tops that many women wear, and yet have a problem with something as natural as nursing. boobs were made for feeding children, it wasn't until the invention of formula in the 1950's that nursing lost it's appeal. i would explain to your son that breastfeeding is a natural thing to do, and not worry about it. i would worry more about the sexually explicit clothing, song lyrics, and TV shows over a woman breast feeding in public.

OMG you saw a boob!? I mean really, it's a boob, there's nothing sexual about feeding a baby. Seriously, it's one of the most natural things in the world!! Why not complain about the people that have their boobs hanging out of their shirts or the butts hanging out of their shorts???? Childs gotta eat!! If you don't like it, don't stare!!! I breastfeed my son out in public, and at my sisters house where her kids are running around, and the kids understand that I am feeding my child and that's what breasts were made for! I wouldn't ask you to go to the bathroom to feed your child? There's much much worse things in the world than seeing a little boob, when a mother is tending to the needs of her child.

I don't think they should have to. Did I breastfeed, no...but it is not a crime. I think that it is very natural and beautiful, however it is possible to do it around others and be a little discreet. It does not bother me one bit if I see some breastfeeding their baby when I am with my 11 year old son, I just explain to him honestly that it is natural, good for the baby and that is what god made women's bodies to do. When he asked why i didn't do it I told him that it is a decision every woman makes, some do it...some do not.

You know nothing about pumping. It causes its own problems with a breastfeeding baby. I'm not a La Leche Leaguer, and I only breastfed my 4 for the first 6 weeks. But why is it such a big deal? Baby has to eat! Baby doesn't want a happy meal! Women's bodies were made to feed babies with built in bottles. They were meant to be used, even if baby gets hungry in McDonalds. (I always used a blanket for modesty, but it really ISN'T a big deal!!)

I wouldn't say they need to be shoved into the bathroom but I hope she had some sort of covering on. Breastfeeding is great, but not in a restaurant or environment where there will be small children. But hey, at least her boobs were hanging out for the reason they were made for. ;>)
