5/(y-4) - 8/(y-4) = 2/(y^2-16)
5-8 = 2/(y+4) = -3
y = -2/3-4 = -14/3

you are correct!!

5/(y-4) - 8/(y-4) = 2/(y^2-16)

(Are you sure one of the two denominators at the left is not y+4 instead?)

Multiply each fraction with y^2 - 16. Because y^2 - 16 = (y - 4) (y + 4) we get

5 (y+4) - 8 (y + 4) = 2
-3 (y + 4) = 2
y + 4 = -2/3
y = -4 2/3 = -14/3

So you should have done it right :)
