Plants provide more surface area for healthy bacteria to grow on. They are a food supplement for your fish and part of the tank's filtering system. You do however need to have at least three inches of gravel for the roots, Good water circulation and temp., and in some tanks a CO2 supplement (I have one tank that the plants thrive in and one that needs the Co2 to keep them growing) dying plant matter does pollute the tank and sicken the fish.

Plants help out the aquarium ecosystem in 2 ways:

1. They provide O2 to the water which fish need. This can also be accomplished by proper filtration or an airstone, but nothing looks better in your tank that live plants, and...

2. Live plants will feed off of the Nitrates that are in the water. Nitrates are the final parameter in your water once a tank has cycled, and just depending on the amount of Ammonia the tank had in it when you did you cycle will probably dictate just what your Nitrates are currently at.

If you do not have a water testing kit - I would recommend getting one, but you could put together a really nicely planted tank (that would benefit you fish) at the rate of about 1 plant per 5g of water. Keep in mind though that certain plants need certain levels of light (measured usually in what is called WPG or Watts Per Gallon). Also - some plants thrive with CO2 in the water, but that is a whole other story.

Check out this site, and join the fourms and ask questions. It will help you out tremendously in the long run before you get started.

Nice to hear that you care for your fish .

The answer is yes it does.

The plant should be a water plant ( any other won't do cause it will die and rot and cause your fish to get sick.)

The plant helps in purifying the water and giving it oxygen which is water dissolved and helps your fish to breathe. It rids the tank of contamination and what your fish throws out after digestion.

The plant even serves as a curiosity for your fish and keeps it more active and it uses it as a shelter when it gets familiar with it also.

Over all it is quite beneficial for your fish.

Yes, that is very true. The fish will feed on the plants, not to mention that the plants will help put oxygen back into the water. Plants will help them feel like they are in their normal environment too. Of course not just any plants. It has to be underwater plants, but I'm sure that you already know that.

Have a great day!

I agree with shaun that plants will oxygenate the water. they do provide a good place to feel comfortable. as to what plants to get, pet stores have a good variety that are usually kept in the tanks with the fish. be sure to check the fish in the tank with the plants you choose. if there are any signs of stress on the fish, you can suspect the plants to have a problem too, and the last thing you want is a tank full of ick or something worse. keep the plants trimmed for dead spots or any other signs of decay that will contaminate your tank

Some fish may nibble on plants. It also may make the fish more comfortable to have something to hide in. The main reason is that plants help to keep the water rich in oxygen.

Yes. My fish who have had plants (even fake ones!) have more zest for life. Talk to someone at your local pet store if you're looking to get live plants--they will tell you what the best type of plant for your fish to nibble on is.

depends what kind of fish and what kind of plant..
if the plant dies it will put pollutants into the water which will be bad for the fish....
there was a MYTH that BETTA fish would eat off the roots of plants - but Bettas are CARNIVOURS and would starve in a few months (they can go along time without food)

It depends on what kind of plants you use. I would get the same kind of fish (that arent as important to you) and test diff plants on them b4 putting them in your luved fish cause I am sure you would feel really bad if the fish reacted badly to the plant and got sick. ALSO talk to animal experts (vets, or petstore workers) see what kind of plants would be good for your fish. Hope this helps you and your fishies sooo much. I wish you and your fishes love and luck. Bye. Luv/Kodi
