My first reaction would be to say that they give individuals less freedom, but it depends on your point of view.
If you are disabled and rely on a family member for transportation, the moral obligation is what gives you the freedom to move around.
Interesting question.

that's a good question. you could write a whole essay on it. Too complicated for a short answer though.
