Actually there are a few meanings of the word...
A woman who is sleeping with a married man would be his mistress. A dominatrix is also considered a mistress. It is usually the term used to identify a woman in charge or In a very powerful position also.

You are more than part right. Where do you think the title Mrs. came from? It is often spelled "missus", but that is just a corruption of the word "mistress", who was the wife of the person in charge, or the most prominent female.
And yes, the term does also (and today is primarily used to) mean the woman with whom a married man is having an affair.

if a man is married and seeing another woman the other woman is the Mistress. Usually they meet up on different occasions or rendezvous usually will last for long periods of time having an affair.
