When the robots become more like living and self-preservating organisms they'll start to really take over, replacing natural plants animals and feed on them. They wouldn't even need to evolve, but rather rapidly adapt and reproduce by budding.

Robots are already taking over and so are aliens and alien robots. They are all working together and there is no stopping them. Perfect example with what you just experienced.
