After reading that link, i felt pretty pissed off. Why are scientits messing around with nature so much? Maybe they should focus on getting the animals that they have in captivity breeding, instead of making hybrids all the time, especially if itz only to boost the number of people coming to their zoo. If China can do it with Pandas, then India can do it with tigers. That **** really pisses me off. Reading this really made me want to write something to someone that can do something about this. But its already happened so i feel helpless.

I think this is a tragedy! I believe that captive breeding programs are the way of the future in my opinion but the experimental cross breeding is unethical in my mind and shouldn't be done. Instead there should be a contingency plan for the lions of the wild that are left to restore habitat and to increase dwindling populations. There was a story on yahoo science news a while back that told of bringing lions to the plains of the united states because their distant ancestors roamed there thousands of years ago. They also wanted to bring elephants, and camels too. Of course this doesn't mean backing the truck up and dumping them out there. They will have to build large fences and fit them with gps collars and will allow them to cover many square miles. I think there needs to be something done to help the animals. We are higher than they are and we need to protect and help them survive before they are gone.

I feel really disgusted with humans, really it's just another example of how people try to perfect what nature has already perfected, and it always ends in suffering for the creature. WHo the hell are we to play God(or Evolution)??!! and all to make more money for thier stupid zoo where they keep animals locked up under the vain pretense of "saving them". Truly they did not care what happened to the animals because the bred 70 of them before realizing thier error, how stupid is that.... Man I am so ashamed of my own species sometimes it makes me sick.... poor lions, and they still keep them alive, suffering.... the ultimate cruelty to me is not allowing an animal to fulfill its role in the ecosystem, instead denying it everything including death to ease suffering. In the wild these lions would already be dead, and out of thier misery... humans are sick!

PS why must people try to keep the dying alive?? It reminds me of how we keep brain dead people alive just so we dont have to be sad at thier loss... selfish, vain and arrogant.
On top of that, it doesn't matter that lions are going extinct, the people at this zoo obviously dont give a crap about it, they only wanted to make more money and have a new product to pander to the public....
If we really want to save animals from going extinct, then we need to start controlling our own population and protect the animals in the wild not cage them for life.

Wow - that is sad. I can't blame the zoo keepers for trying, though. Big cats are going extinct. Such efforts to save them are worthy.

I give them credit for recognizing that the two breeds were not meant to cross and for ending the program.

I also praise them for giving the cats a chance to live and grow old with at least some dignity.

The cross-breeding never should have been attempted. Now they have animals that can hardly walk, and are being kept out of sight until they die. That's just wrong!

That makes me sick and breaks my heart. I couldn't even read the link. It's truly sad. I feel sorry. People need to stop messing with biology like that. So sad. My heart goes out to those animals.

i believe it was wrong to do that. i love animals and it makes me very sad to know it died by the hand of man. cross breeding is something that should and shouldn't be done. i think it shouldn't be done to low numbers. it should be studied well before tring anything. though we cannot stop it completely we should just try our best to accept that it is a part of life.

Sad really, the big cats are going the way of the Sabre tooth cats. Instead of blaming them, we should support them to continue.
