I have small black particles that are mixed into my water. It appears to only come from the hot water side and not the cold. Whatever this is, it seems to stain my bathtub quite easily. It will create a thin black ring around the edge of my tub when filled. I have also noticed, if I ever leave a cup facing up in the dishwasher, that the dishwasher water also has these particles. Does this sound like a hot water heater that is about to die, or do I need to just flush the system? Any help would be appreciated.

depending on how old your water heater is? theres particles that build up in the bottom in atlanta its blue particles there is a drain at the bottom of the heater open it ant see if its more particles come out if so hook up a hose try flushing out cheaper than a new heater.

Sounds like the down spout in the water heater is corroding or the inside is just shot and your due for a new one. Get it replaced before is clogs airiators and valves or your really have your hands full.

The hot water tank is glass lined, but hard water or water with a lot of iron content will cause that. If the water lines (pipes) are pvc or copper, it's probably the water, if they are galvanized, the pipe could be deteriorating inside.

Sometimes the rubber washers that seal the faucet from leaking may be falling apart. Are you in an Apartment? If so, No telling which unit there coming from.

yep, it sounds like the hot water heater is dying, and it sounds unsafe...it could be something from that, or from pipes, or mold...better call the utilities dept and have them check the water.
