Hate to say this NASCAR is a sport I get tired of saying it because it is not by default its a mental and physical sport. Could u be in a car for 4 or 5 hours if not longer in a firesuit, helmet, gloves, in 120 weather? I think that takes guts, would you risk your life like they do every time they get in that car? That also takes guts. Do you know how much air to put in the tires so you get the maximum performance out of the car, or know how to turn it on, how much fuel mileage you can get, know where to be in the corners or straight aways? I know I don't know alot of these things, and some come from rich families others risk everything they own so they can be in NASCAR, for instance Carl Edwards his parents almost lost their business trying to make him succeed, not sure about the details but thats pretty close to the point so think twice before you say its not a sport.

You have to start on a local level of Friday and Saturday races. The work up to local and regional touring divisions. Then if you are doing well there and have some money or a good sponsor you can enter the national touring divisions which may or may not lead to some of NASCAR lower divisions. When you can prove your worth there ARCA ,Trucks maybe Busch. The when you learn these and maybe be able to find a ride in the Cup level.
Good Luck.

Most drivers start in a lower class of racing using their own money. If they're good enough to win consistently in the minor leagues, they usually can find someone to hire them to drive, maybe one rung up the ladder. Family backing, emotional and financial, has been key to many drivers success.
In addition to driving you need skills in:
Public relations. Drivers need to do radio and TV ads, go to public events, etc., for their sponsor.
Team leadership. NASCAR is a team sport. Drivers who inspire their teammates to do great work are far more successful.
Physical fitness. After three hours in a car at over 120 degrees, the physically fit driver has a huge advantage in the final laps.

Well, most of these guys have been racing since they were kids. Also, if you notice, many come from racing families, or families with some money, as this is not cheap. I think that in addition to success on the local tracks, and of course talent, it takes a lot of luck, and good connections. Someone linked to the system has to notice you and pull you in. Or at least it seems like that is how most of these guys get to the big time. Good sponsors are also important, it takes good equipment to be successful, and this takes money- even at the local level.

I don't understand why people like Tito and Chick No answer these questions. If you don't like NASCAR that is your choice but you don't have to show your ignorance by posting answers to questions pertaining to the sport, yes that is right it IS a sport.
You have to of course be a good driver but you definitely need money and sponsorships. It is not a cheap sport by any means.

You have to be good at driving round in circles hundreds of times, possibly with a mullet and a moustache.
Edit : Ignorant, I am not. If you want to go racing, you'd be better off in go-karts, at least you get to turn both ways. Nascar is a sport by default, like poker.
