it equals 41/24, or 1 17/24.
You get the answer by finding the least common denomonator (LCD) which is 24 in this case. Then multiply the numorator by the amount it takes to turn the denomonator to the LCD. And add acrossed, leaving the denominator the way it is. I hope this helped. <><

First find the Least Common Multiple (LCM) by factoring the 6 and the 8:
6 = 2*3
8 = 2*2*2
now take the MOST factors of each denomination from each...
take the 3 from the 6 (ignore the 2 because there are more of them in the 8 than in the 6...
take the 2's from the 8...
3*2*2*2 = 24 = LCM
now... you have to multiply 6 * 4 = 24 so you need to multiply
5 *4 = 20 and you end up changing 5/6 into 20/24...
now you need to multiply 8 *3 = 24.. so multiply 7*3 = 21 and changes 7/8 into 21/24...
now that you have a common multiple you can add them together...
20/24 + 21/24 = 41/24...
now, most teachers want you to reduce or change this into a mixed number... since 41 is larger than 24 you take out one by subtracting 24... 41-24 = 17 and you have 1 and 17/24

This is about the addition of fractions of different kinds.
You can not add apples and oranges. So turn them all into cups of juice!
In this case the juice is made by cross multiplying the 6 and the 8 to make 48. But if you multiply the bottom, you have to multiply the top too. 5x8 will tell us the value of the first fraction in 48's
so the first fraction is 40/48
We multiply the 8 by 6, so we mutiply the 7 by 6 as well.
The second fraction becomes 42/48
40/48+42/48 = 82/48
So that gives us 82/48
We can take out 48/48 as a 1
That gives us 1 and 34/48
34/48 can be reduced to 17/24
We end up with 1 and 17/24
Or we can convert to a decimal and get 1.708333333333
;-D Math fractions me!

You need common denominators.
6 = 3 * 2
8 = 2 * 2 * 2
You need a number that is divisible by 6 and by 8. 3*2*2*2 has one 3 and three 2's. So it is divisible by 3*2 and also divisible by 2*2*2. 3*2*2*2 = 24. Yep, it's divisible by 6 and by 8.
5/6 + 7/8
= (5*4)/(6*4) + (7*3)/(8*3)
= 20/24 + 21/24
= 41/24
.....__1_remainder_17
24 | 41
.....-24
.....----
17
(The graphics aren't good enough. The above is supposed to be long division.)
So 1 17/24 which cannot be simplified because 17 is a prime number and not divisible by 3 or 2 like 24 is.
The answer is 1 17/24.

find a common denominator and add...
ok, what's the common denominator?
there's 6, 12, 18, 24, 30. 36.... as multiples for 6
there's 8, 16, 24, 32, 40.... as multiples for 8
hey look, 24 is common to both.... 6 x 4 is 24 and 8 x 3 is 24
now, what's the new fractions?
since you need to multiply 6x4 to get 24 for the denominator of the first fraction, you need to multiply 5 by the same number... that makes 5/6 equal to 20/24
since you need to multiply 8x3 to get 24 for the denominator of the second fraction, you need to multiply 7x3 to get the numerator...... that makes 7/8 equal to 21/24
now add them.... 20/24 + 21/24..... that's 41/24... simplify it and that becomes 1 and 17/24

first you find the least common denominator which in this case would be 24.
Find common denominator, mutliply. You are basically trying to make both denominators 24.
5/6*4/4 + 7/8*3/3
Add
20/24 + 21/24 = 41/24
41/24 = 1 71/100 or 1.71
