This is a good example that shows how confused people are at the term UFO. And as the first answerer noted, its not "flying": actually it's orbiting under no power. There are thousands of pieces of space junk orbiting the earth (see url). Lots of them bolts and nuts. So just because NASA or someone identifies something as a UFO doesn't mean it is something alien or mysterious. It might just be a nut.

As opposed to the alien and mysterious nuts who claim it must be aliens.

well...

there is something that is travelling (at the same speed as the shuttle) that the astroNOTs are observing. they had to extend the mission because they are not able to land until they know 100% what they are observing is not a critical part of the ship.

the object is travelling at approx. 176 miles in space while the shuttle orbits at approx. 220 miles in space.

since something cannot travel at that speed in space without being propelled (aka - fell off the speeding shuttle...) or by some other sort of propulsion they want to make sure it's not l. ron hubbard or something wierd.

more than likely though it's a piece that fell of the ship somehow.

No, they have no idea what it is. It is co-orbital, meaning it's flying around the earth the same speed and trajectory as the shuttle, meaning it is something that came off of or out of the shuttle.

Because they don't know specifically what it is, it is Unidentified. It is Flying, sort of, and it is an Object.

The object in and of itself is not dangerous, but if it turns out to be a tile from the heat shield, that would be bad.

According to another similar question there appeared to be a box of parts that were lost and are alleged to be following the shuttle. Why they haven't retrieved them I really don't know. You would think they would admit that though. Anything small I would imagine would fall behind or slip away. Maybe it's on a tether. If this is bouncing off of the tiles the ship could be doomed. Could they really be that stupid?

Yes, it is a UFO, in the sense that we aren't exactly sure what it is. However, it's probably just a piece of trash, or maybe a gapfiller that got pulled from the shuttle during separation maneuvers. Or, (worst-case scenario), it's a thermal blanket, part of the thermal protection system (TPS) that protects the shuttle during reentry.

Here's hoping it's just trash.

UFO, Unidentified Flying Object. They're not sure if it's a part of Atlantis that broke off, that's why they can't come back to earth yet.

I don't think that is true, you should tell us your source. I think the article you read is misleading because what really happend recently was a cargo from the shuttle fell from the shuttle a while before the shuttle entered space.

Technically it is a UFO[Unidentified Flying Object] Check my source.

Yes, it was unidentified at first, but then when they took a closer look at it, they were able to identify it as a a tool or piece of equipment that drifted out of the cargo hold when they left it open.

What they saw is just a debris of some kind, not an alien UFO.
