The invention of the printing press was monumental. So is the continuing development of the computer. The Magna Carta was a big deal. As is Darwin and his theory of Evolution. Penicillan saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

Bad things would include "The Plague". Modern artillery weapons can be bad, depending on which side you're on. Setbacks will always follow dramatic advances. Look at our experience with Space travel.

I'm gonna have to stick with the invention of the printing press. It for the first time allowed people to share ideas and thoughts on a grand scale. Before that, most folks were content with a subsistence level of survivng, unless you were nobility or a leader in the church. This event I feel is always underestimated. But thats just my opinion.

1. "The devastating volcanic eruption of Thera in the Bronze Age (dated to ca. 1630-1600 BC geologically; 1550 BC archaeologically) has become the most famous single event in the Aegean Sea before the fall of Troy. The eruption would likely have caused a significant climate upset for the eastern Mediterranean region. It was one of the largest volcanic eruptions on Earth during the last few thousand years."

Since the closest civilization to Thera at this time was Minoan Crete, this is often colloquially labeled the "Minoan eruption". (Wikipedia)

4. Declaration of Independence - 1776. For the first time in history a colony successfully rebels against its king. The birthday of the first modern democracy - the first democracy since ancient times.

5. World War I - led to the Russian revolution, fall of empires and rearranged the world - not to mention being a cause of WWII. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I#Culmination_of_European_history
