This will happen sometimes. The managers in retail jobs probably feel threatened by your success( your degree) so they won't hire you .They also tend to think people with degrees will get bored with the job and eventually leave.I know because it happened to me. You don't need to put *everything* on your application now that you know how people in positions of power think.Tailor your applications to each individual job and you'll get a job faster.Good luck.Check your colleges job board for job possibilities.

When you applied at the Best Buy type stores, did you apply for a management position? A degree might be more applicable to that.
I must tell you very directly that I think the psychology field is terrilby stupid (I've never been one to mince words), and psychology has never proven what it can do, except make people worse, in my humble opinion. I did take some psych classes when I was in college years ago, but it was so bizarre that I didn't waste much time with it.
I have a suggeestion, based on what I did. Start a business mowing lawns. Think about it, you can make more per hour than you can at Best Buy, and even though it's a small enterprise, you don't have to be subject to mediocre people in some insipid pecking order, and you immediately become your own CEO.
That's one suggestion, and I happen to think it's a great one. You also might want do something like washing windows, which requires even less equipment.
It's always better to be in your own business, if at all possible and it doesn't have to be one with a large cost. Notice how no one has mentioned this. The school system has conditioned people to think "job," and not "entrepreneur."

You are trying to enter into a pretty saturated job market for starters and, unfortunately you are 100% right about the psych degree.
I'm an engineer and have had the same experiences that you are having. Don't give up so easily, you big wimp! Keep sending out resumes until the cows come home!! And then send a bunch more!!
Let's face it though. You are also looking to get into a "civil service" type of job that pays a lot less for the aggravation than many other jobs.
If you are living at home with your folks, my best advice is go back to school and get a useful degree like something in IT, science, teaching or something else, or get your doctorate in psych and write books.

Yes. Companies do not want to hire overqualified people because the hiring process is a pain in the butt to employers. Someone with the appropriate education and experience is more likely to stay at that job longer than someone who is overqualified. Overqualified people will get bored or find something better and leave quicker.

I am in exactly the same spot! some say not enough education, others look at you like u are crazy for applying with them. in asking questions on here i have learned it is because of a few things, outsourcing and someone dont want to give us an entry level job because they know we will be looking to move on as soon as we can and will demand high pay. i cant afford to go back to college, want to start my life, and i am already in debt enough!!!
I am almost tempted to lie and not tell people i have a degree, just so i can get any job !!!!!!!!!!! im not entry level matterial nor PH.D. it sucks.
that is what i have been finding out. I guess all we can do is keep searching :-S

It's not your over qualification but your lack of experience. You need to start on the bottom and work your way up. Keep putting your applications in but you have to be realistic. No one will hire you for what you want w/out experience. Try Temp agencies first then hit smaller places. Good luck!

Yes it can happen as they know you'll quit as soon as you find something better. You may want to consider waiter/bartender work. Pays good, fun enviroment etc. Thats what I did and I have a BBA in International Finance.

Entirely possible. The mall places probably figure you won't stick around. Or the managers felt they might be intimidated.
