First open up your Java. Lexicaly analyze your expressions but you won't need any arithmetics, you'll probably just need FOIL or the Pythagorean theorem

Go look at antlr: http://www.antlr.org/

Read thru the tutorial, then figure out your EBNF for your arithmetic expressions. Anltr will digest your grammar file and emit Java source files for your lexer.
