My kids friend have asked if they can have their fish and I didn't care, but our tank isn't set up yet and when I checked, our filtering system doesn't have a filter in it. I know this is a stupid question, (I am sorry about this to!) but can I use a cut to fit air conditioning filter in it until I can buy the correct thing? We have NO place in our town that sells fish aquarium supplies so I have to wait to go out of town to get some. Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Not a dumb question. Sounds like a good idea, only thing I would be concerned about would be if there's any chemicals from the manufacturer or what chemicals were used to make it. And are you talking about those disposable ones or the reusable ones? I wouldn't recommend the disposable ones, they might disintegrate and make a mess.

Ok here's an idea, how about get a pair of pantyhose, cut one side long enough to tie off. Stuff it with some cotton balls, knot it at the top??? Just make sure you rinse the pantyhose out good to make sure there's no residual soap left in them.

I wouldn't worry about the filtering unless you won't have supplies for a week. You will first have to condition the water to remove the chlorine. Usually with carbon, filter, and air it will condition it in 24 hours. Since you don't have carbon, run the air for 48-60 hours to condition it naturally. If you don't do this the fish will die. This will provide a temporary holding tank. Remember the air is important.

Tikitiki is correct about DIY filters, but if you are really wanting to get proper supplies for your filter - just go out to nextag.com and do some searches on things like "Marineland" and/or whatever the manufacture name is of your filter (nextag is an awesome shopping comparason site for all kinds of stuff - not the least of which is aquarium products).

Good luck!

I would suggest a bit of sea sponge. It will strain the water well without stressing the pump (and is an ideal breeding ground for nitrifying bacteria. You don't have to replace it right away. Rinse it out in lukewarm water a few times. It should last you for at least six weeks
