Blues!
I don't know if its a fellowship and empathy with similar sad situations. Maybe its hearing about how people have it worse than me that makes my problems seem not as bad.
Actually I don't even need blues lyrics. Some instrumentals by Roy Buchanan, Mike Bloomfield, Stevie Ray Vaughn, etc. do the job. Its just that universal 141541 pattern that helps me work out the blues.
Also Christian Contemporary takes the emphasis off being all about me and puts the light on God or my fellow man.
Favorites are Crystal Lewis, Point Of Grace, Sara Groves, Natalie Grant, Steven Curtis Chapman, Twila Paris, etc.

All Kinds of music no specific genre....Sad/Heavy music makes me feel better, because I can get out my frustrations, and I know I'm not the only one to feel like I am.Korn is probably my all time favorite when I'm depressed. It seems like really depressing music, and the lyrics and vocals most times reflect that.But they bring out the hurt, frustration and angst, and make me realize that life is worth living and I'm not alone in this universe. I owe Jonathan and KoRn more than I could ever repay them.

When I'm down I Iike to listen the the Blues. Susan Tedeschi's 'Better Days' is my current favorite. Beautiful voice that girl has. Very soulful.
When I feel good, and am happy I listen to lots of different kinds of music....Merle Haggard, Natalie Merchant, Nellie, 50 Cent....lots of different stuff!
