You need to install Stuffit Expander (http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/ ) to open many types of compressed files. And Its free. Then just double click the compressed files and follow the instuctions (either drag and drop into the Applications folder, or sometimes, run the installer).

I think I understand what's going on here. Most new Mac users aren't used to the simplicity of the Mac. All you have to do is drag the icon for the program you are trying to install into your Applications folder. That's it. Simple, eh? There's no "installation wizard". Most Mac applications are contained in one simple icon. No fuss. :-) Also, did you know that iChat is compatible with AIM? That's right, you can use your AIM ID on iChat. I wouldn't use AIM. iChat is much better. Hope that solves everything. Any other Mac questions, send me a message.

I wouldn't use Firefox. You don't need to. Safari is a powerful and fast browswer. From my experience, its much faster than Firefox. It's just as safe, too. I like how well it manages bookmarks. RSS is awesome too.

Hello chinaavaginaa

First off, congratulations on getting your new Mac.

When you download something, the file usually shows up on your desktop. If the file name has a .sit, .sitx, .zip, then you need to double click on that to un-compress it.

Perhaps the file on your desktop will have a .dmg in the name. This is a disk image. You double-click on that and you will get a sort of hard drive looking icon that appears just below that. Sometimes a window comes up with all of the files, or sometimes you have to double click to open the window.

Sometimes you can simply drag the files into your Mac's Applications folder. Sometimes you need to double-click on an installation icon, and the software takes over from there.

You will need to remember your administrator's password to OK the installation. I hope that you remember that password. When you first install the Mac Operating System you type in a password. If you don't remember that you can change your password by putting in the main Mac OS X disk, but that's another story.

The software should install itself in all of the proper places for you. Best of luck to you.

I easily have been a Mac consumer for 2 years, with 24/7 connection to the internet by way of cable, without anti-virus utility of any style and characteristic had NO (0, nada) issues - an adventure particularly friendly for me as a former domicile windows consumer.

At what point does the installation process fail? In what way? You need to be more specific.
