I didn't start using them until I was about your age, so don't feel bad. The tampon you choose makes a big difference. Since you have a light period, you can go with the smallest size - regular or slender regular. You should get one with a plastic applicator, since they are easier to insert than paper. I prefer Kotex Regulars, but I've heard good things about Tampax Pearl, too.
It's easier to insert it if you stand with one foot on the edge of the tub. Don't think 'up' - think 'back'. Direct it toward your tailbone rather than your ribs. RELAX. It helps a lot. If you find that you're still having trouble with it not sliding easily, try using a lubricant like KY Jelly. Insert it until your fingers touch your body, then press the end to insert the tampon itself. If it is at all uncomfortable, remove it and start over. Once it's in and comfortable, you'll never even know it's there.
One thing - you might want to use a pantyliner with the tampons at first - at least until you're sure.

you can get teen tampons or slender ones - if you have light periods these would work for you. Just relax and it will just slide in there, no pain. I sometimes push the tampon out of the applicator a bit before I put it in as sometimes they are hard to push out once you've inserted it. Once you start with a tampon you'll NEVER go back - much more cleaner feeling!! you almost forget you have your period

If I use a tampon when I'm having a light period, it definitely feels uncomfortable compared to when I'm having a heavier period. You have to try it for yourself, though, because everyone is different. I gave up on tampons a long time ago, but some people wouldn't live without them. Even if you find it uncomfortable to put one in, once it's in you won't notice it at all. You don't have anything to lose by trying them, and you might find out that you're one of those women who wonders how you've lived without them for so long. At least give it a chance.

I had the same problem until I was 18! It is SO much more comfortable once you get over it, though. I recommend the tampax compact "regular" tampons with plastic applicators. It really won't hurt as long as you don't tense up before. I guess in some sense it takes practice!
Good luck!

No it shouldn't hurt. If it does, you're doing it wrong. Use the slender ones. You may feel a little... umm... weird, but not bad weird. Don't worry, relax, and if it's not comfortable for you, then suck it up and use a panty liner.

I just started using them, my Mom helped me learn how. I like them a lot more than pads. I was worried at first but now it's just a normal thing.

Get a mirror and take a look while you insert it. And RELAX. Nothing fits in when you are stressed.
