I had a CT scan about 28 hours ago, and they said it was almost int he bladder but was 3/4 of a centimeter. I'm kina afraid it can get stuck. Any way to prevent it? Never had a kidney stone before. It doesnt hurt near as much but there is pressure now.

Okay, first off, OUCH and double OUCH!! Those stones can really hurt. Right now your very blessed not to have the pain that is normally associated with passing a stone. Imagine if you will a tiny little sticker (like the goatheads from outside) that is bascially what a kidney stone looks like, a tiny goathead sticker. Now imagine it passing through an even smaller hole (your bladder piping) and the points getting "stuck" as it passes. It isn't exactley going to get stuck--unless it can not pass on its own--it just really really hurts going through. Things you need to do while its passing, drink water, lots of it, if you have been prescribed any pain medication use it when it starts to hurt worse, do not let the pain get out of control or you'll never get it under control. Drinking the water will help you expel the stone but if it starts to hurt so bad you can not stand or even think get yourself to your local emergency room.

To avoid the stones in the future drink plenty of water and avoid high protein diets and caffeine.

Good luck, let us know how it goes! I'm thinking about you, those really hurt.

Are you sure he said 3/4 of a centimeter? That's nearly 8 millimeters. According to my doctor when I had a 4 mm kidney stone, they don't like to let anything bigger than 4 mm go without help. I ended up having surgery to remove mine.

The doctor told me that there are points where the pain is greater - when it leaves the kidney, when it passes over a bundle of nerves near the pelvic bone, when it enters the bladder, and when it leaves the bladder. Mine didn't make it to my bladder - they removed it for me in a quick, no-incision surgery.

If the doctor does want you to try to pass it on your own, drink lots of water. You may have a little strainer to try to catch the stone (and it clearly was NOT designed for use by women). Try to catch the stone, because they can figure out what kind of stone it is, and that can help prevent future stones. If you feel pain, take your meds right away - if you don't get it when it starts, you'll never catch up to the pain. Trust me on this one.

Stones can sometimes take weeks to pass. It is possible for the stone to get stuck, and this can cause serious damage. If you see blood in your urine, develop a fever, or have ongoing pain, be sure to call your doctor.

Edit - as far as anything dissolving the stone, it depends on the type of stone. There are four different kinds of stones, the (by far) most common being a calcium based stone. Nothing dissolves calcium based stones.

I feel for you. My urologist told me that they can get stuck and if they do, they need to be surgically removed. I have had many in the last few years and have had x-rays and scans to find out where it is. I felt each and every move it made -- the pain can be intense. If you find you are in extreme pain, go to the emergency room. They will call your urologist.

I told my doctor it was a kidney boulder, not a stone, that I passed earlier this year and he told me that the size of the stone (I still have one that has not passed) I currently have is about the same size -- the normal and usual size.

Beware -- I got a kidney infection, bladder infection, urinary tract infection and was trying to pass that kidney stone -- all at the same time. The doctor told me if the stone gets stuck along the way, it can cause everything else to get backed up and an infection results. I had no idea all of that could be the result, but I am watching this one carefully and making sure I do not ignore all the pain (I kept telling myself I was being too sensitive and to suck it up!). By the time I acknowledged all the pain, I could barely move . . .

Do not be scared -- this, too, shall pass.

It can take days. The junction where the ureter opens into the bladder is one of the 3 main spots where a stone can get stuck. Just wait it out and if it doesn't pass in a few days, go back and get it checked again. Good luck!

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.
