Are you allowed to ask questions in an essay?

Say for example you use something like, "Would it be ethical to allow this type of behaviour?"

Or any question like that?
I'm wondering if there are any 'rules' about it and if it's not allowed for formal essays or anything.

Of course you can use questions in an essay, but make sure you answer the questions. You don't want to leave your audience at a loss for answers. For example:

Would it be ethical to forbid abortion? While many people may believe so,.......others don't BECAUSE.......

Why is the sky blue? Why isn't the sky red or green? These are all very good questions. The most important thing to understand when discussing these questions is.....bla bla bla.

There aren't rules about using questions in an essay, but they're a great way to get people to really consider your topic. However, make sure you ASNWER the questions (unless they're the last sentence of your essay for a dramatic effect) and back them up with support (evidence).

I'm working on getting my credentials so...I hope that helps!

I really like using them in essays where they are opinion based like reflection papers. I think it adds another element, and i've never heard any negative comments from instructors.

it is a stylistic device that can be used if not abused.
a question like that sometimes helps the reader to identify the problem you are trying to tackle in your essay.
try to avoid the "rhetorical question", a question which is more like an assertion rather than a question

you should probably phrase it like a statement
example: it is the scientist resposiility to uncover if this type of research is ethical.
