I was given nitrous oxide for about one hour and x-rays were taken of my teeth at the dentist a few days before I found out that I was pregnant. Will the baby be OK? I've read that nitrous oxide causes birth defects.

I am not sure about nitrous oxide. I have heard it can be used as a pain reliever during labor, and I don't think it would be available if it could hurt the baby. I know that the baby needs to be shielded from x-rays, which dentists generally do, even if you are not known to be pregnant.

The good news, is that so very early in the pregnancy, the baby is so little and as soon as it needs nourishment it relies on a yolk sac for any nutrients it needs. I have been told that many of the things we worry about ingesting aren't as much of a problem before the baby is getting nourishment directly from you.

Please talk to your doctor as soon as possible, as I am sure s/he will be able to make you feel better about it.

Best of Luck!

You should continue to care for your teeth in the normal manner. If x-rays are necessary, your dentist will shield the baby. Filling cavities or taking antibiotics for dental procedures is safe and desirable, as pregnancy can increase dental disease. Local anesthetics (like novocaine) are safe. However, since nitrous oxide hasn't been proven to be safe during the first trimester of pregnancy, your dentist should NOT use it while you are pregnant. I would suggest you speak to your obstetrician as soon as possible. It is entirely possible you were not yet pregnant, so you'll want to get an exact EDT or ETC (estimated time of delivery/ conception) to be sure. Even in the early weeks your baby might be perfectly fine..so try not to get too stressed. You need your peace of mind for the months to come! Good Luck!
